Guest blog by Jenny Gray, work experience placement at bcsAgency

Hello, my name is Jenny and I have always had a keen interest in working in PR. I heard about bcsAgency through a good friend of mine, Mitch, who also carried out a work placement here. So, here I am, in my last few days of working at bcsAgency and I wish to share with you my experience of what it has been like working with the company.

Your first impression, they say, is the last impression. The last thing I wanted to appear was ditzy (a word that has stuck with me all my school and university life). So, it didn’t help that upon arrival I didn’t know how to get into the building. Never a good start. But it is that kind of thing that will always happen to me. A bit like how I turned up to my interview wearing my smartest of outfits but only forgetting to change out of my “driving” shoes – you can imagine.

Nevertheless, I got into the building safely and I have to admit, I did find the experience a bit daunting. I was still thinking about those first impressions, worrying about what everyone will think of me. I did not need to worry, as everyone was welcoming and friendly and I quickly adjusted to my surroundings.

bcsAgency offered me the chance to work full-time in an office environment. I mastered the “office” phone, adapted to using Microsoft Outlook as opposed to Hotmail (harder than you think!) and learned how to live without my phone for more than three hours.  I was introduced to the media database, Gorkana, and before I knew it, found myself creating media lists for Poland, Spain and India.

Not only did bcsAgency teach me the foundations of working in an office, but they also gave me an opportunity to produce a case study, a press release, a blog and a feature – words which had not meant much to me before working at bcsAgency.

My first approach to writing one of these was nerve wracking – I was so used to writing 3,000 word essays involving heaps of (unnecessary) analysis that writing something short and sweet seemed quite the challenge. This helped me develop my writing skills giving me a boost in confidence as the team seemed to like it too – and the CEO of one of the agency’s biggest clients loved a blog I wrote for him. Brilliant!

Working at bcsAgency has given me a large insight into the world of PR. I am ever so grateful to everyone at bcsAgency who has given up their time to provide me work experience. I would like to thank all of bcsAgency for this wonderful opportunity :)
